History
Since 1989 Southland Blues has been an important source of news and information for Southern California blues fans. It all started with a two page printed newsletter that eventually evolved into a glossy color cover monthly print magazine. Our print magazine was distributed to over 150 targeted locations including clubs, festivals, music and record stores and restaurants throughout Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties. The magazine ran successfully from 1990 until 2013. in 2006 we also launched our online Southland Blues E-Weekly newsletter which continues to this day.
Editor and Publisher Dan Jacobson, whose career with the Blues now spans over 40 years, was first to bring the Blues to radio station KLON-FM88 in Long Beach as creator and host of “Blues After Hours” (1977-1980).
In 1980 Dan helped found the Long Beach Blues Festival and served as Festival Producer through 1986. Dan then went on to produce the Hollywood Blues Festival at the John Anson Ford Theater (1987, 1988, 1991) and hundreds of concerts including Southern California’s premier blues harmonica event, the annual Battle of the Blues Harps from 1989 to 2013. After 24 years, Dan passed the long running event on to Scott Abeyta of Rip Cat Records. Now in its 36th year, The Battle of the Blues Harps continues on to this day as a production of StellarShows.net. Southland Blues has continued to strongly support the event through promotion and advertising.
In 2004 The Blues Foundation honored Southland Blues with a "Keeping the Blues Alive" award for Achievement in Print Media.
